Star player Martin Guptill retires from international cricket

New Delhi: Cricket fans have got a big shock in the new year. New Zealand cricket team’s star player Martin Guptill has announced his retirement from international cricket. He has scored a double century in the ODI World Cup. He holds the record for scoring the highest score in the ODI World Cup. In this case, West Indies’ Chris Gayle also pales in front of him.

Opening batsman Guptill had not played any international match since October 2022. He played a total of 367 international matches in his 15-year long career. This included 198 ODIs, 122 T20s and 47 Tests. He scored a total of 23 international centuries and 76 half-centuries.

38-year-old Guptill has scored a total of 13463 runs in his international cricket career. He scored 7346 runs in ODIs at an average of 41.73, including 18 centuries. Whereas in Tests, he has scored 2586 runs at an average of 29.38.

He is still the Kiwi player who has scored the most runs in T20 Internationals. He has scored 3531 runs in 122 matches at an average of 31.81. He has also scored 2 centuries and 20 fifties in this format. He made his international debut in January 2009 in an ODI against West Indies.

A total of 3 double centuries have been scored in the ODI World Cup so far. Apart from Guptill, West Indies’ Chris Gayle and Australia’s Glenn Maxwell have achieved this feat. But the record of the highest score in a World Cup match is in Guptill’s name.

He achieved this feat in the 2015 ODI World Cup. Then he played an unbeaten innings of 237 runs in 223 balls against West Indies at Wellington ground. In this innings, he hit 11 sixes and 24 fours. In this World Cup, Chris Gayle played an innings of 215 runs against Zimbabwe.
