New Delhi: North India is in the grip of cold wave. At the same time, rain knocked with bitter cold in the plains and there is heavy snowfall in the mountains. Dry and cold weather will continue next week. Cold and light fog will prevail on New Year’s Eve, which may cause difficulties in open events. For the last six years, the mercury has been 5 degrees Celsius or less on New Year’s Eve, with the lowest 2.4 degrees recorded on 28 December 2019. Since 2007, the minimum temperature has remained below 7 degrees. The same is expected this year as well, and the temperature is expected to be between 6°-7°C on the evening/night of December 31.
Fog will prevail in the morning and evening
Cold wave conditions are likely to start in some places of North India from December 29. Dense to very dense fog is likely to prevail in isolated places of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Rajasthan during late night/morning during December 28-30. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely to prevail in some places of Himachal Pradesh on December 30 and 31. Dense fog will prevail in Delhi during late night and morning. It is likely to be partly cloudy and cold wave during evening or night.
Cold and temperature conditions in December
The lowest temperature of this December was 4.5°C, recorded on December 16, 2024. Usually, the last week of December is the coldest, but this time the pattern may change. Last year the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.9°C (December 15). The minimum temperature in the last four days has been between 8°-9°C. Cyclonic circulation and related weather activities will cause a change in the wind pattern. Cold winds will stop in the northern plains. Persistent cloud cover will reduce the cold at night, and the temperature may rise to 10°-12°C. After this, the temperature will fall again and the cold will increase significantly during the New Year celebrations.
Weather activity in the last 24 hours
During the last 24 hours, there was widespread snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. Scattered rain and snowfall occurred in Uttarakhand. Hailstorm activity occurred in parts of Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. Delhi, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh received light to moderate rain with heavy rain at some places. Light to moderate rain occurred in Punjab, Haryana, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and South Karnataka. Day temperatures have dropped significantly in northwest and central India.
Weather activity in next 24 hours
During the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain is possible over East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Light rain is possible over Kerala, Lakshadweep, West Madhya Pradesh and Central Uttar Pradesh. The Western Disturbance will move eastwards and the weather will become clear over most parts of the country along with the mountains from December 29. Minimum temperatures will fall by 3 to 4 degrees across Northwest and Central India.
