UPI payment rules will change from February 1, know what will change

January 30, 2025

New Delhi: In today’s busy life, UPI has become an important part of our daily life. With the advent of UPI, making transactions has become much easier than before. You will be surprised to know that hundreds of crores of UPI transactions are taking place every day across the country, through which transactions worth thousands of crores of rupees are taking place every day.

In today’s time, UPI is being used extensively not only in big cities like Delhi-Mumbai but also in the smallest villages of India. But from February 1, there is going to be a big change in the rules of UPI, which will have a direct impact on UPI transactions. From February 1, 2025, no UPI payment app can use special characters like @, $, &, # to create a transaction ID.

This simply means that the central system will not accept the transaction IDs with special characters created by UPI apps and the transactions will fail. This will also have a direct impact on common people. If you are using any such UPI app that uses special characters to create transaction IDs, then in such circumstances you will also not be able to make payment through UPI.

Actually, UPI operator National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) wants to standardize the process of creating transaction IDs and that is why NPCI wants all payment apps to use only alphanumeric characters to create transaction IDs and avoid using special characters. Some experts told Economic Times that this rule of NPCI is for special merchant account holders, but if understood carefully, it will also affect common people.

NPCI has clearly told all UPI operators providing services in the country that they will have to use alphanumeric characters only to create UPI transaction ID, otherwise the central system will not accept any UPI transaction done through their app and they will fail. It is the full responsibility of the payment app to follow the new rules of NPCI, but if they do not follow the new rules as soon as possible, then it will directly affect their users.

According to the UPI circular issued on January 9, 2025, “Reference may be made to our OC 193 dated March 28, 2024, wherein UPI payment apps were advised to use only alphanumeric characters for generating UPI transaction IDs. This is to ensure compliance with the UPI technical specifications.

We are working with the ecosystem to improve compliance. Given the criticality of compliance with the specifications, it has been decided not to allow any special characters in UPI transaction IDs. Transactions generated using transaction IDs with special characters will be rejected by the central system. This will be effective from February 1, 2025.”

According to a circular issued by NPCI on March 28, 2024, all UPI transaction IDs must be 35 digits long. The transaction ID should neither be less nor more than 35 digits. There should not be any special character in the transaction ID. If the transaction ID is less or more than 35 digits, then the central system will reject that transaction.
