New Delhi. The heat of American President Donald Trump’s trade war is going to affect India as well. The 26 percent reciprocal tariff imposed by America on India has come into effect from Wednesday. There are chances that its effect can be seen on jewellery. Apart from this, it is going to affect things including electronics, auto parts.

The special thing is that America had earlier fixed the import duty at 27 percent, which was later reduced to 26 percent. According to the chart presented by Trump, India charges 52 percent duty and America will now charge a concessional retaliatory duty of 26 percent from India. This 26 percent duty is different from the current duty imposed on Indian goods in America.

It is reported that after Trump’s decision, the Indian government is also on alert mode. There are chances that a big cabinet meeting may be held on Wednesday to reduce the impact of tariffs on India. At present, nothing has been said officially about this. India seems to be moving forward very cautiously on this issue. It is being said that India has not decided to impose retaliatory tariffs against the US. Nothing has been said officially about this either.

The US was India’s largest trading partner from FY 2021-22 to 2023-24. The US’s share in India’s total merchandise exports was around 18 per cent, 6.22 per cent in imports and 10.73 per cent in bilateral trade.
