New Delhi. Uproar has erupted over the statement of interim government chief Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh. The government and opposition parties in Tripura have come together and are requesting the central government to give a strong reply to the statement of Bangladesh’s caretaker government’s advisor Mohammad Yunus. Yunus had said during his China visit that North-East is a landlocked area of India and only Bangladesh can give it access to the sea.
BJP and opposition expressed displeasure
BJP’s Tripura translator Nabendu Bhattacharya said that the Indian government is taking several steps to protect the country’s borders and everyone is aware of what is going on in Bangladesh. He said that Yunus’ statement is completely baseless. At the same time, opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary called it a childish statement and said that the issue of access to the sea is decided under international laws, not by the decision of any one person.
Pradyot Kishore Debbarma also warned
TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma released a video on social media and said, “This statement is a direct attempt to threaten the North-East. They are calling China to come and invest in our country. The Indian government will have to take strict steps now, otherwise these people will keep threatening us again and again.” He further wrote on social media that Yunus’ statement is an attempt to weaken India’s ‘Chicken Neck’ corridor, which connects the North-East to the rest of the country.
Many North-East leaders called the statement provocative
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and many North-East leaders strongly condemned Yunus’ statement. Sarma said, “This statement of the advisor of the caretaker government of Bangladesh is provocative and completely unacceptable. It is part of a well-planned strategy, which should not be taken lightly.” He also said that work should be done on alternative road and railway network to strengthen the Chicken Neck Corridor. Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh also condemned the statement and said that this is an attempt to challenge the integrity of India, which will not be tolerated at all.
Opposition raised questions on Modi government
The opposition raised questions on the silence of the Modi government on this issue. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said that it is sad that India’s foreign policy has become so weak that now even a country like Bangladesh is openly moving closer to China. Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev took a dig at Yunus and said that first he should look at the borders of his own country, because Bangladesh itself is surrounded by India on three sides.
Leaving Chittagong was a mistake: Pradyot Kishore Debbarma
Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said that if the port of Chittagong had remained in India in 1947, then such a situation would not have arisen today. He warned, “Yunus himself is a temporary leader, he will not last long. Tripura is not very far from Chittagong Port, he should remember this.”
