The government has the Waqf Bill but there is pressure from South parties on delimitation… How will this week be in Parliament?

  • March 24, 2025

New Delhi: The third week of the second phase of the current budget session of Parliament is starting from today. The last week of Parliament also ended amid uproar. There are chances of uproar in Parliament today as well because the central government has the Waqf Bill, which almost all the opposition parties are opposing. At the same time, the leaders of the South are mobilized on the delimitation dispute and MK Stalin has also held a meeting with the Chief Ministers and other leaders associated with the opposition parties. Along with this, Manikam Tagore of Congress has presented an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the ‘recovery of a large amount of cash at the residence of a Delhi High Court judge after a fire’.

    Waqf Bill to be presented
The Waqf Bill can be presented by the Center today, due to which there is a possibility of a confrontation between the government and the opposition. On the other hand, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has announced a nationwide protest against the Waqf Bill. Most of the opposition parties are opposing the Waqf Bill. At the same time, the cabinet has approved some changes in the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. This bill is to be introduced in the Lok Sabha after discussion.

Congress listed flaws in the Waqf Bill
The Congress on Sunday termed the proposed Waqf Bill as an attack on the Constitution by the Central Government and listed several flaws in it. In a statement, Congress MP and communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh said, “Through this bill, the BJP is trying to damage the ‘centuries-old bonds’ of social harmony and keep the society in a state of polarization for electoral gain.”

Jairam Ramesh also said in his statement, “The 428-page Waqf report was ‘bulldozer-passed’ through the Joint Committee of Parliament without any due discussion.” Congress said that this bill is an attempt to defame minority communities and weaken the constitutional provisions that guarantee equal rights and protection to all citizens, irrespective of their religion.

    Delimitation dispute in discussion
South leaders have geared up to tackle the delimitation dispute. Recently, a meeting was called in Chennai under the leadership of DMK, in which the Joint Action Committee passed a 7-point resolution on the issue of delimitation. The committee expressed concern that there is a lack of transparency and clarity in the process of the impending delimitation and there has been no consultation with the stakeholders involved, i.e. the states.
