Varanasi. There is a stir in Uttar Pradesh due to Varanasi gang rape case. 23 savage beasts had brutalized a 19 year old girl for 6 days. So far 14 people have been arrested in this case and the search for the absconding accused is going on. Meanwhile, Varanasi Police has formed an SIT team and within 60 days the SIT team will submit the report on this entire incident. Senior officials will also be included in the team.
At the same time, the family members of the 14 accused arrested in the gang rape case of a girl in Varanasi protested on Thursday and said that the accused are innocent. The family members of the accused have raised questions on the story of the victim. More than 100 family members of the accused reached the Police Commissioner’s office and protested. They say that the girl has trapped innocent people by making a fabricated story. Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal has taken an application from the family and assured a fair investigation.
According to police officials, the victim had gone out with some youths on March 29. When she did not return home, her family lodged a complaint on April 4. The police had earlier said that when the girl was rescued, she did not tell anything about the rape. However, the victim’s family lodged a complaint on April 6 that she was gang-raped.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Varanasi on his one-day visit on Friday (April 11). After reaching Varanasi, PM Modi took detailed information from the officials about this gang rape case in his parliamentary constituency. After this, he directed the officials to take strict action against the people involved in this case. He had said that strict action should be taken against all the culprits. Also, such an incident should not happen again.
Police had earlier said that a case has been registered under sections 70(1) (gang rape), 74 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 123 (causing hurt with intent to commit a crime), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 127(2) (wrongful confinement) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police have so far arrested 14 of the 23 accused in the case.
A major action was taken on Monday in the gang rape case of a student in Varanasi. After PM Modi’s displeasure, DCP Varuna Chandrakant Meena was removed. On Monday, he was removed from Varanasi and attached to the DGP office, Lucknow. According to sources, the DCP did not take strict action in the case on the very first day. Neither did he give any report against the negligent police station in-charge and inspector. Due to this, the senior officials were angry with him.
