‘Protect your minorities first’, India’s blunt reply to Bangladesh for giving advice on Murshidabad violence

  • April 18, 2025

New Delhi: India’s Foreign Ministry has shown the mirror to Mohammad Yunus, rejecting the comments of the interim government of Bangladesh on the violence in Murshidabad, West Bengal and has advised Bangladesh to first focus on protecting the minorities here. The spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said that the comments made by Bangladesh regarding the events in Bengal are rejected.

Responding to media questions on the comments made by Bangladesh officials on the developments in West Bengal, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday, ‘The comments made by Bangladesh regarding the events in West Bengal are unacceptable. This is an attempt to compare India’s concerns with the ongoing oppression of minorities in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, criminals who commit such crimes roam freely.’

Bangladesh should first focus on its own
He said that instead of making inappropriate comments and demonstrating its goodness, Bangladesh should focus on protecting the rights of its minorities. In fact, on Thursday, the press secretary of Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus called on Indian officials to protect the minority Muslim communities affected by the violence that erupted in Bengal’s Murshidabad district last week. Three people have died in this violence, while many have been injured.

    Revelation in the investigation report
At the same time, the initial report of the Home Ministry said that Bangladeshi anti-social elements were involved in the Murshidabad violence. The investigation also found that the Mamata Banerjee government of Bengal failed to keep an eye on the infiltrators, as a result of which unrest spread in Murshidabad and 24 Parganas during the protests against the amendment in the Waqf Act.

Let us tell you that the situation in Bangladesh has remained unstable since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power last year. Many attacks were carried out by fundamentalist organizations targeting Hindus and minorities inside Bangladesh. During this, about 200 temples have been vandalized and priests have been arrested. India has raised concerns at various diplomatic levels about the situation of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.
