New York: There has been a war going on between Russia and Ukraine for three years. All efforts for peace and agreement have been futile so far. Meanwhile, America is talking to both the parties and is working out a formula for a peace proposal. It is reported that the Trump administration has prepared a surprising suggestion regarding the Ukraine-Russia deal. Trump’s special envoy has advocated giving some important areas of Ukraine to Russia. He has proposed to give four Ukrainian areas to Russia. However, strategic differences are being seen within the Trump administration on this ‘deal’.
In fact, last week Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a negotiator from his side to Washington. The Russian negotiator attended a dinner with the Trump administration and discussed peace in Ukraine-Russia. Less than 48 hours after this dinner, big information has come to light. US special envoy Steve Witkoff, who is leading the talks with Moscow, met President Donald Trump at the White House and spoke directly.
‘Four eastern Ukrainian regions should be handed over to Russia’
Witkoff said, the most accurate way to ceasefire in Ukraine is to give Russia ownership responsibility of the four eastern Ukrainian regions that Russia tried to occupy illegally in 2022. Two US officials and five people familiar with the situation told news agency Reuters that Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff has described this as the fastest way to bring about a ceasefire.
This is the same point that Witkoff has raised earlier as well. He reiterated the same thing in a recent podcast interview. However, Kiev (Ukraine) has already rejected this proposal. Some US and European officials also consider this to be an excessive demand from Russia.
Opposition to Witkoff’s proposal
According to sources, during the meeting at the White House, President Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine affairs, General Keith Kellig, opposed Witkoff’s proposal and said that Ukraine may be ready to negotiate on some conditions related to the disputed land, but it will never be ready to unilaterally hand over full ownership of these areas to Russia.
Witkoff reached Russia to meet Putin
For now, this meeting ended without any decision. That is, it could not be decided whether America will change its strategy or not. At the same time, Witkoff reached Russia to meet Putin on Friday. He met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.
Let us tell you that differences are increasing within the Trump administration regarding ending the deadlock between Ukraine and Russia. There are deep differences between Witkoff and Kellig regarding the strategy. American officials and people associated with it and four Western diplomats who are in contact with the administration also admit the differences.
Witkoff’s office, the National Security Council, the State Department, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and the Russian Embassy in Washington have declined to comment on the issue.
Earlier, Witkoff bypassed security rules and invited Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev to dinner at his private residence before the White House meeting. Kirill Dmitriev is facing US sanctions after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2022.
This caused a stir inside the White House and the State Department. In the US, Russian officials are usually avoided being invited home. Russia’s intelligence capabilities are believed to be very strong. Later this dinner was held at the White House.
Witkoff is an old friend of Trump
Witkoff is an old friend of Trump and has brought many diplomatic successes for him. He also has some support from the anti-Ukraine section of the Republican Party, but his proposals have angered those Republicans who believe that the Trump administration has leaned too much towards Moscow.
Sources say several Republican lawmakers spoke by phone with National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio after Carlson’s interview and expressed concern about Witkoff being seen as explicitly pro-Russia.
US foreign policy has shifted dramatically since Trump took office again in January. He began pressing for a ceasefire in Ukraine and eased many of the sanctions imposed on Russia by the Biden administration.
Some US and European officials are concerned that as Witkoff carries out Trump’s strategy, Russia is taking advantage of his lack of experience, according to two US officials and more than a dozen people familiar with deliberations within the administration and Western diplomats.
‘Remove Witkoff and bring in Rubio’
Eric Levin, a major donor to the Republican Party, wrote a letter on March 26 saying Witkoff must go and Rubio must take his place. This letter has been sent to many Republican donors. This letter has been written after the Carlson interview and Witkoff’s appearance on Fox News. Witkoff openly praised Putin.
Earlier, Trump has said many times that he wants a ceasefire in Ukraine by May. He argues that the US should end this conflict, in which millions of people have died and which could pose a risk of direct confrontation between the US and nuclear-armed Russia. However, two partial ceasefire agreements so far have been stuck and the President is frustrated by the slow pace of this progress.
