New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day US tour from February 12. He will discuss issues like trade, immigration, defense, tariff with US President Donald Trump. Trade relations between the two countries have grown rapidly in the last five years. Since Covid, India’s trade with America has increased from $ 88.9 billion to $ 119.7 billion, while exports have also increased from $ 17.3 to $ 35.3 billion in five years.
PM Modi is the third among the world leaders to meet Trump during his second term. Earlier, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba have visited. This visit reflects the growing stature of India-US relations but it is also an opportunity for India amid the tariff issue. Modi can present India’s side on plans to reduce import duty on products and reduce trade deficit through defense and energy deals. This is likely to resolve the issue of tariff issue.
Trade agenda at the forefront in the meeting
The trade agenda will be at the top in the visit. Trump has called India a big tariff maker, but has refrained from announcing new tariffs. India is also reducing tariffs on imports.
Emphasis will also be on defense deals
India has purchased defense equipment worth about $20 billion from the US since 2008. This includes C-130J and C-17 aircraft. India wants to buy 31 drones from the US and tenders have been issued for about 114 fighter planes.
Trip amid tariffs
The possibility of higher tariffs by the US on Chinese steel and aluminum has increased the risk of cheap imports increasing in the Indian market. India has exported iron and steel worth $457 million to the US. Apart from this, India has also exported aluminium products worth $950 million. According to experts, exports in such a large quantity can also lead to dumping in the Indian market.
H-1B visa and immigration issues will dominate
The issue of H-1B visa and illegal immigrants being taken away in shackles may dominate the Modi-Trump meeting. Trump is preparing to make changes in the H-1B visa program. At the same time, Modi can give his opinion on the other side regarding illegal immigrants being sent to India being kept in shackles.
