New order of Mamata government, now Bengal’s potato will not be sold in these states

December 05, 2024

New Delhi: Due to the Tughlaqi order of Mamata government, people of Bihar and Jharkhand are now facing shortage of food items. Potato and onion are now disappearing from people’s plate. Potato-onion traders in Kishanganj, Katihar and Purnia of Seemanchal bordering West Bengal are facing huge problems. Due to lack of supply of potatoes in Jharkhand, potatoes are being sold at high prices. Meanwhile, a situation of dispute has arisen in the interstate trade between Jharkhand and West Bengal regarding potatoes.

It is worth noting that the Bengal government has banned the transport of potatoes and onions to Bihar. Police force has been deployed at Rampur check post on Bihar-Bengal border, so that potatoes cannot be brought from Bengal to Bihar. After this decision, there has been a stir among the traders in the border area. There is a possibility of a wild increase in the prices of potatoes.

On the orders of the Bengal government, potato-laden vehicles are not being allowed to cross the border. The Bengal Police clearly says that potatoes and onions will be sold only in Bengal. It will not be sent to any other state. The Mamata government has taken this step in view of the shortage of potatoes and onions in the state. At the same time, there are many areas in Bihar-Jharkhand, which are border districts of the Bengal border. The people here mainly depend on the markets of Bengal. Due to this decision, lakhs of people are being affected.

There is a potato-onion market in Rampur, Bengal, adjacent to the Kishanganj border, from where potatoes and onions are supplied to Kishanganj district. In the 90s, potato traders started business by opening shops on the Bihar-Bengal border, since then this business was flourishing. Potatoes and onions reach about 20 lakh citizens of Kishanganj district from Rampur Potato Market, but after the latest order, the traders have become upset. Dozens of small and big vehicles loaded with onions and potatoes are parked in the potato market, which were to be sent to different parts of the district, but the police did not allow these vehicles to cross the border.

Potato traders said that the police administration had started sending the vehicles back by putting up barricades since Wednesday morning. If this situation remains, there will be a huge shortage of potatoes and onions in Kishanganj. He said that potatoes and onions are perishable items. If they are not sold at the right time, traders will suffer huge losses.

Meanwhile, buyers who have come from far and wide are also upset. Customers said that if potatoes and onions are not allowed to cross the border, the prices will increase wildly, the brunt of which will have to be borne by the people of the district. Local ward councilor representative Shafi Ahmed said that this is a Tughlaqi decree of the Mamata government. The central government and the state government should intervene in this matter and immediately remove the ban on the supply of potatoes and onions.
