Mohammad Yunus received a letter from PM Modi, India reminded Bangladesh of the Liberation War and history

  • March 27, 2025

New Delhi: Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, who was waiting to meet India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has received a special letter. This letter has been written by Prime Minister Modi on Bangladesh’s Independence Day. Bangladesh celebrates its Independence Day on 26 March. This day marks the historic moment in 1971, when Bangladesh separated from East Pakistan and became an independent country, thanks to India’s military assistance.

In this letter, PM Modi mentioned history and described the unbreakable spirit of the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 as the foundation of strong India-Bangladesh relations, and subtly reminded Bangladesh of India’s role in its establishment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mentioned the Bangladesh Liberation War in his letter at a time when efforts are being made to erase the legacy of Banga Bandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in this neighboring country of India. There have been attacks on symbols and signs associated with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Bangladesh after the removal of Sheikh Hasina from power following the alleged revolution on August 5 last year.

In a message shared by the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh, PM Modi greeted the people of Bangladesh and wrote, “This day is a testimony to our shared history and sacrifice, which has laid the foundation of our bilateral partnership.”

Acknowledging the deep ties between the two countries, he further said, “The spirit of Bangladesh’s liberation struggle continues to guide our relations, which have flourished in many areas and are bringing concrete benefits to our people. We are committed to furthering this partnership based on our shared aspirations for peace, stability and prosperity and mutual sensitivity to each other’s interests and concerns.”

It is worth noting that during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, India provided military, diplomatic and humanitarian assistance to the people of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The Indian Army fought a war against the Pakistani Army, which resulted in Pakistan’s defeat in Dhaka on 16 December 1971 and Bangladesh became an independent nation.

Let us tell you that the interim government of Bangladesh led by Yunus is struggling to maintain the trust of the public, while the discussion of the political return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is gaining momentum.

By referring to the Liberation War of 1971, PM Modi has given a message to Bangladesh that India’s role in the creation of Bangladesh is the reference point of relations between the two countries.

It is worth noting that after the departure of Sheikh Hasina from power, the new regime of Bangladesh has adopted a confrontational attitude towards India. But Bangladesh, which was dependent on India for many things, is now coming to its knees.

Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus has expressed his desire to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has sent his message to India in this regard. There are discussions that Yunus may meet Prime Minister Modi during the BIMSTEC summit to be held on 3-4 April in Bangkok. But New Delhi has not yet given any reaction on whether PM Modi will meet Mohammad Yunus or not.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar had earlier told a parliamentary committee that Bangladesh’s request is being considered.

Government sources said on Wednesday that the bilateral meetings of Modi during the program will be announced later.

Let us tell you that after the departure of Sheikh Hasina, Dhaka’s behavior on bilateral issues including the fencing being done by India on the Bangladesh border, the security of Hindus in Bangladesh has been out of the box and not in accordance with India’s expectations. Therefore, India has been cautious in taking relations with Bangladesh forward.
