Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to the President on the deteriorating situation in Manipur

  • November 19, 2024

New Delhi: The situation is deteriorating rapidly after the recent violence in Manipur. Not only the leaders of various political parties but many civil organizations there have appealed to curb the violence and take strict action against the Kuki militants. Meanwhile, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu regarding the deteriorating situation in Manipur. Kharge has urged President Murmu to intervene immediately in Manipur. He also said that it should be ensured that the people of the state live peacefully in their homes with respect.

The two-page letter written by the Congress chief to President Murmu states that the Manipur government and the Center have failed to ensure law and order and safety of the people in Manipur in the last 18 months. In the letter, he said that more than 300 people have lost their lives due to violence in the state, including women and children. He said that due to the deteriorating law and order there, about one lakh people have become victims of internal displacement. They have become homeless and are forced to live in various relief camps.

In the letter, Kharge has written, ‘I believe that Honorable Madam, as the President of the Republic of India and the custodian of our Constitution, it has become constitutionally imperative for you to maintain constitutional propriety. Also intervene immediately to ensure the safety of lives and properties of our own citizens in Manipur. ‘ He further said that I am confident that through the intervention of your office, the people of Manipur will again live peacefully in their homes with dignity.

During this, he also mentioned the rising inflation in the state and said that the state’s economy and retail inflation have increased by 10 percent. Referring to unemployment, he said that it has made the lives of the people of Manipur extremely difficult. The mental health of the people has been affected very badly. Kharge attacked the state and the Centre and said that the Central Government and the State Government of Manipur have completely failed to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur in 18 months. Now the people have lost faith in both the governments. Due to lack of any help from the governments, the local people are finding themselves completely isolated and helpless for more than 540 days.

In fact, they have lost their faith in the Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of the state to protect their lives and property. You must be aware that the Prime Minister has not visited the state since May 2023 despite the demand of the people of Manipur. Kharge said that he himself and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have come to Manipur thrice in the last 18 months. The Prime Minister’s refusal to visit Manipur is beyond anyone’s understanding. Therefore, he appeals to His Excellency to intervene.

Ethnic violence has been going on in Manipur since May last year, in which more than 300 people have been killed and thousands displaced. Violence continues in the state, but the uproar has increased after the killing of three women and their three children in Jiribam earlier this month. People’s anger has erupted in protest against the Jiribam incident and protesters have vandalized and set fire to the houses of several MLAs in recent days. A protester is also alleged to have died in police firing in Jiribam. This has also increased the tension.

In view of the violence, Assam has sealed its border with Manipur. Police have been deployed on the border so that anti-social elements cannot cross the border and enter Assam. As a result of the latest violence, the BJP government led by CM N Biren Singh is under heavy pressure and the demand for re…
