New Delhi. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is once again trapped over his statements. A Lucknow court has issued summons to him over the controversial remarks made on the Indian Army during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022. The court has fixed the next hearing in the case on March 24. Rahul Gandhi will have to appear in the Lucknow MP-MLA court. This is a special court of this kind, which hears cases related to MPs and MLAs.
Former Border Roads Organisation (BRO) director Uday Shankar Srivastava had filed this complaint against Rahul Gandhi, on the basis of which a defamation case was registered against him. According to the report, Rahul Gandhi made controversial remarks about the Indian Army during his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in December 2022.
What did Rahul Gandhi say
Rahul Gandhi had reportedly said, ‘Chinese soldiers are beating Indian Army personnel in Arunachal Pradesh.’ He made this remark to take a dig at the government. This statement was made regarding China’s activities on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). After this remark, a big political controversy arose and Rahul Gandhi was severely criticized.
Many BJP leaders termed Rahul Gandhi as “anti-national”. Also, he accused the Gandhi family of receiving money and hospitality from China through the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. However, despite these criticisms, Rahul Gandhi continued to corner the government on the issue of China.
Suspension from Parliament in defamation case
In March 2023, Rahul Gandhi was convicted in a case of a remark made on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname. A Gujarat court sentenced him to two years in this case, after which he was disqualified from Parliament for some time. However, the Supreme Court later granted him relief and stayed his sentence. The apex court said that the lower court had given the maximum sentence of two years. If the sentence had been even a day less, he would not have been disqualified.
