New Delhi. In the strategically important region of Ladakh, the Indian Army unveiled a grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on 26 December 2024 on the banks of Pangong Lake. Now a controversy has arisen over the unveiling of the statue. Chushul councilor Konchok Stanzin has raised questions about the lack of local interaction regarding this statue and its connection with the cultural and environmental background of Ladakh.
Indian Army building road and bunker
Pangong Tso Lake has been a high altitude lake area located in eastern Ladakh. This lake has been the center of tension between India and China. The disengagement process that took place in this area in 2021 was an important step towards reducing tensions, but the area is still very sensitive. Shivaji’s statue on Pangong Tso is not only symbolic, but it also reflects the changed strategy of the Indian Army on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The army is rapidly building infrastructure in Ladakh, including roads, bridges and permanent bunkers, to respond strongly to any difficult times in the future. This statue is a reminder of India’s strategic and cultural strength in a region where territorial sovereignty has always been challenged.
Chushul councilor Konchok Stanzin expressed his concern about the statue, writing on social media, ‘As a local resident I have to express my concern about the statue of Shivaji on Pangong. It was installed without local interaction and its relevance in the context of our unique environment and wildlife is questioned. We should give priority to projects that truly respect our community and nature. ‘
His comments have sparked debate. While many consider this statue a symbol of India’s power, some say that such initiatives should take into account the unique cultural identity and fragile ecology of Ladakh.
Indian Army moves towards strengthening its presence on LAC
This statue has been installed at a time when the Indian Army is making extensive plans to strengthen its presence on the LAC. The recent disengagement agreements in the Depsang and Demchok areas after long military and diplomatic negotiations have reduced tensions in these disputed areas. However, these agreements are considered temporary measures and vigilance remains required. The infrastructure of the Indian Army in Ladakh is rapidly moving towards development.
