New Delhi. Justice Sanjeev Khanna, the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court, will be the next Chief Justice of the country. The current Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud has recommended Justice Khanna to be the next CJI to the Central Government. If the Central Government accepts this recommendation, then Justice Khanna will take over as CJI on November 10. The current Justice Chandrachud is retiring on the same day. Justice Khanna’s tenure will be till May 23, 2025. That is, he will remain in this post for about six and a half months.
The Central Government had requested the CJI last Friday to suggest the name of his successor under the established rules. In response to this, Chief Justice Chandrachud has made this recommendation. Justice Sanjeev Khanna is known for his impartiality and legal scholarship in the Indian judiciary. Before being promoted to the Supreme Court, he has been a judge of the Delhi High Court. He was made a judge of the Supreme Court on 18 January 2019. Justice Khanna is the nephew of former Supreme Court judge Justice Hansraj Khanna.
Born in Delhi
Justice Sanjiv Khanna was born on 14 May 1960. CJI’s father Justice Dev Raj Khanna also retired as a judge of the Delhi High Court. His mother Saroj Khanna was a lecturer at LSR DU. He completed his schooling from here. In the year 1980, he took a graduation degree from Delhi University. After this, he took admission in law from DU.

After completing his law studies, he enrolled as a lawyer in the Bar Council of Delhi in the year 1983. Initially started practice in Tis Hazari campus of Delhi. After this, he practiced in various fields in Delhi High Court.
Appointed in Delhi High Court in the year 2005
In the year 2005, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of Delhi High Court. After this, he was made a permanent judge in the year 2006.
Appointment in the Supreme Court in the year 2019
After serving as a judge in the High Court from 2006 to 2019, he was promoted as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 18, 2019.
Appointment was surrounded by controversy
According to media reports, when Justice Sanjeev Khanna was promoted to the Supreme Court in January 2019, his appointment created controversy. Actually, despite there being other senior judges in the line in terms of age and experience, he was directly appointed to the Supreme Court.
Uncle has also been a judge
According to media reports, apart from Sanjeev Khanna’s father, his uncle Hansraj Khanna has also been a Supreme Court judge. His uncle had given many important decisions. Apart from this, his father was a judge in the Delhi High Court.
