New Delhi. Chandrayaan-2 was launched five years ago. Although Chandrayaan-2 crashed during landing, its orbiter is still present in space. ISRO has recently done a great job with Chandrayaan-2. Actually, ISRO successfully averted a possible collision between the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter and the Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) over the Moon. If this accident had happened, both orbiters could have been damaged, which would have been a big setback for the space world.
According to ISRO’s unclassified monthly summary for September 2024, the planned maneuver for the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter scheduled for September 19 was carefully modified to prevent a collision with the Korean orbiter. It was believed that this collision could happen on October 1 and that is why ISRO took quick action with only a few days left. The adjustment involved changing the path of the orbiter OM 87. Apart from this, ISRO had also changed the tentative plan of the next maneuver OM 88, so that any kind of collision with other orbiters including NASA’s LRO could be prevented.
Let us tell you that so far three moon missions have been launched in the country. The third moon mission Chandrayaan-3 was successful in August last year, when it successfully landed on the south pole of the Moon. Scientists from all over the world congratulated ISRO. Before that, Chandrayaan-2 was launched in the year 2019, but it could not make a successful landing in the last moments. Even after this, the orbiter of Chandrayaan-2 is still working and providing important information related to the moon and space to the scientists.
