New Delhi. Bangladesh has requested India (Bangladesh beat India) for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. According to sources, India is not in a mood to respond to this request. Bangladesh has not completed the formalities required for this. On December 23, Bangladesh sent a note to the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India through the High Commission in Delhi, which was not signed by anyone. According to sources, this is a low level of diplomatic dialogue. It is not usually used for sensitive matters like extradition.
Sheikh Hasina has been living in India for some time. She left Bangladesh after the fierce student movement and took refuge in India. Yunus and senior leaders involved in the Bangladesh regime have described Hasina’s presence in India and her statement as the cause of tension. Let us also tell you that the agitating students are putting pressure on the interim government to bring back Sheikh Hasina.
Sources say that extradition is not a simple process. For this, both the parties have to perform their respective duties. The option of raising a legal challenge against extradition has not been used yet. Apart from this, there are some provisions under the India-Bangladesh Extradition Treaty 2013, under which the extradition request can be rejected. According to Article 6 of the treaty, extradition can be rejected if the crime is of political nature.
India’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed on December 23 that India had received a note from Bangladesh, but he refused to comment further on it.
India is concerned about the attacks against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. However, some changes have been seen in recent times. Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman recently told a leading Bangla newspaper that Bangladesh will maintain a balanced relationship with India and the relationship between the two countries will be based on fairness.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh and India have exchanged 185 fishermen who were arrested for crossing the international maritime border. The exchange will be completed on January 5. 95 Indian and 90 Bangladeshi fishermen will be exchanged.
