New Delhi. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the One Nation One Election Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Government sources say that this bill will be sent to the JPC for discussion. According to sources, the government will send this bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for long discussion and consensus building. The JPC will discuss in detail with representatives of all political parties and will emphasize the need for collective consensus on this proposal.

    Opposition in opposition
Elections are held in different states at different times in the country. After the law is made, there is a preparation to conduct simultaneous elections in the country. However, this move of the government has been opposed by many India Block parties like Congress and AAP. The opposition has alleged that this will benefit the ruling party at the Center. Key NDA allies like Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) and Chirag Paswan have supported the simultaneous elections. ‘One Nation, One Election’ is being seen as an important reform to reduce the costs and disruptions associated with frequent elections.

Former President Ram Nath Kovind chaired it
The high-level committee formed to consider ‘One Nation, One Election’ said that 32 political parties supported the proposal, while 15 parties opposed it. This high-level committee was chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. Ram Nath Kovind said during the 7th Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture in October that many of the 15 opposing parties had earlier supported the idea of ’One Nation, One Election’.

How was the ‘One Nation, One Election’ report prepared
Former President Ram Nath Kovind shared many important things related to ‘One Nation, One Election’ on the platform of Agenda Aaj Tak. Former President Ram Nath Kovind said that it took roughly 6 months to prepare this report. 3 months were spent on invitations. Then we started interaction. We interacted on day to day basis for 2 months. This report is of more than 18 thousand pages. I was informed that no committee of the Government of India has submitted such a big report till date. This report is prepared in 21 volumes. We asked for suggestions from the public for this. For this, more than 100 advertisements were given in 16 languages. 21000 people responded to it. 80 percent people were in favor of it. Apart from this, we also called the former Chief Election Commissioner. Representatives of FICCI, ICC, Bar Council were also called.

This bill can prove to be a game changer for the country
Former President Ramnath Kovind said that 5 to 5.5 lakh crore rupees are spent in conducting elections in India. If this bill is implemented, then only 50 thousand crore rupees will be spent in conducting simultaneous elections. This will save a lot. The remaining money will be used in industrial growth. Overall, after the implementation of this bill, the country’s GDP is expected to increase by about one to one and a half percent. In such a situation, this One Nation, One Election can prove to be a game changer for India.
