New Delhi: The general budget of the central government has been presented and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made many big announcements in the interest of the middle class to laborers. Giving the 8th budget speech of her tenure on Saturday, Nirmala Sitharaman announced to make arrangements for registration of ‘gig workers’ on the e-shram portal. Workers will get identity card
FM Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the full budget of Modi 3.0, announced that 1 crore ‘gig workers’ will be registered on the e-shram portal. Through this, arrangements will be made to provide identity cards to these workers. In his budget speech, the Finance Minister said that the ‘gig workers’ of online platforms are playing an important role in accelerating the new age service economy. In view of this, the government is making arrangements for their identity cards and registration on the e-shram portal.
Health coverage under PMJAY
Along with registration on the e-shram portal, the central government has also announced to provide health coverage to these 1 crore gig workers under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. In fact, in the budget, an announcement has been made about the social security scheme for the welfare of gig workers working for online platforms. To understand it in clear words, gig workers have been included in the e-shram portal under the social security scheme by giving a new look to schemes like PM Swanidhi Yojana. The government has also talked about issuing a UPI-linked credit card of Rs 30,000 for them.
Who are these gig workers, where will the registration have to be done?
Gig Workers refer to those workers who provide their services as freelancers to different employers instead of working permanently for a company. The government has announced a social security scheme in Budget 2025 to benefit such workers working for online platforms. Their registration will be done on the government’s e-shram portal. Through which ID cards will be issued to these gig workers.
The government started the portal in 2021
It is worth noting that the government runs this E-Shram Scheme in the interest of laborers working in the unorganized sector across the country. It was launched in August 2021. Especially for those workers who are not members of EPFO or ESIC. The age limit of 16 to 59 years has been fixed to apply for e-shram card. For its registration, there should be a valid mobile number, Aadhaar card, bank account, skill document and education certificate.
