January 07, 2025

Tibet. 6 series of earthquakes occurred within an hour on Tuesday morning in Shizang, a hilly region of Tibet bordering Nepal, including a powerful earthquake of 7.1 magnitude on the Richter scale. According to the news agency, the earthquake has caused loss of life and property in Tibet and at least 9 people have died. The earthquake has caused massive destruction in Shigatse city of Tibet. Infrastructure including many buildings has been damaged on a large scale.

China’s state news agency Xinhua said that 53 people have died and 38 have been injured in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Dingri County of Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet). Earthquake tremors were also felt in many areas of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. Strong tremors of earthquake were felt in various parts of North India including Sikkim and other northeastern states, Bihar and West Bengal on Tuesday morning. After feeling strong tremors in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, people ran out of their homes and ran towards the streets and open spaces.

According to Chinese media, many buildings also collapsed near the epicenter of the earthquake. China’s public broadcaster CCTV said, ‘Very strong tremors occurred in Dingri County and its surrounding areas and many buildings near the epicenter of the earthquake collapsed.’ People ran out of their homes after feeling strong tremors in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. Meera Adhikari, a resident of Kathmandu, told news agency ANI, ‘I was sleeping, suddenly the bed started shaking. I thought my child was shaking the bed. I did not pay much attention, but the shaking of the window made me feel that a strong earthquake had occurred. I quickly took my child and ran out of the house and went to the open field.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the first earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck Xizang near the Nepal-Tibet border at 6:35 am local time. An earthquake of this magnitude is considered quite powerful and is capable of causing serious damage. Chinese officials recorded a magnitude of 6.8 in Shigatse city, the second largest city in Tibet. Five more tremors were felt from the same Xizang region within an hour, measuring 4.7 and 4.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was located where the tectonic plates of India and Eurasia collide.

The Himalayas have been formed due to the collision of these tectonic plates. The collision of these plates creates such a strong bulge in the mountains of the Himalayan range that the height of some of the world’s highest peaks can change. According to CCTV, in the past 5 years, 29 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or more on the Richter scale have occurred within a radius of 200 km of Shigatse city. However, all these earthquakes were less powerful than the earthquake that occurred on Tuesday morning. The epicenter of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Shigatse was located at 28.5 degrees north latitude and 87.45 degrees east longitude and it was at a depth of 10 kilometers from the earth’s surface.
