New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has reiterated his position on India’s high tariff policy, but praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a ‘great friend’ and a ‘very smart person’. Talking to reporters at the White House, Trump expressed confidence that the ongoing trade talks between the two countries will bring positive results. However, there is pressure from his administration to impose reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods.
President Donald Trump said, ‘Prime Minister Modi came here recently and we have always been very good friends. India is one of the countries imposing the highest tariffs in the world… He is very smart.’ He said that he is a very smart person and a good friend of mine. We had very good discussions. I think this will give very good results between India and our country and I want to say that you have a great Prime Minister.
Let us tell you that this statement of Trump has come at a time when trade tensions are increasing and America is preparing to impose tariffs on countries including India.
He said, “I have very good relations with India, but my only issue with India is that they are one of the highest tariff imposing countries in the world. I believe that they will probably reduce their tariffs to a great extent, but on April 2, we will impose the same tariffs on them that they impose on us.

“Prime Minister Modi came here recently, and we have always been very good friends. India is one of the countries with the highest tariffs in the world… They are very smart,” Trump said. “He is a very smart man and a good friend of mine. We had a very good discussion. I think it will work out very well between India and our country. And I want to say you have a great prime minister.”
The statement comes at a time when trade tensions are escalating, and the US is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on countries, including India, for what Trump has termed as unfair trade practices.
Trump has repeatedly criticised India’s trade policies, previously calling India a “tariff king” and its import duties “very unfair and strong”. “I have a very good relationship with India, but my only issue with India is they are one of the countries with the highest tariffs in the world,” he said. I believe they will probably reduce their tariffs substantially, but on April 2, we will impose on them the same tariffs that they impose on us.”
Since February, India has taken significant steps to strengthen trade ties with the US, in a bid to ease tensions over tariffs. New Delhi has pledged to increase US energy purchases from $15 billion to $25 billion.
In response, President Trump announced that India could soon buy F-35 stealth fighters and that talks could now see Washington become a major supplier of oil, gas and military equipment.
