New Delhi. America’s newly elected President Donald Trump (78 years) has faced a big crisis before the oath. Trump will have to appear in court for hearing in the case of paying money to a porn star to keep quiet. The court will pronounce the sentence on January 10. During this time Trump himself will have to appear in court. However, the judge has indicated that he will not go to jail.
This court order has come less than two weeks before taking oath as President. Trump will take oath as US President on January 20. Earlier, Trump had rejected the allegations of paying money to the porn star and called it a political conspiracy.
New York Judge Juan Merchan indicated that he would not sentence Trump to jail or fine him, but would give him ‘conditional release’. He also wrote in his order that the newly elected President can appear for the hearing in person or virtually.
Justice Juan Marchan’s decision means that Trump will have to appear in a court hearing just 10 days before his swearing-in on January 20, an unprecedented development in American history. Before Trump, no former or current US president has been accused or convicted of any crime.
What did Trump’s team say?
In a statement, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said, no sentence should be pronounced in this case. Cheung said, this lawless case should never have been brought and the Constitution demands that it should be dismissed immediately.
Earlier, Trump had argued to dismiss the case against him, saying that he had won the presidential election. His team had criticized the judge’s decision to proceed with the sentence. Trump’s defense lawyers had argued that the case hanging over him while he was in office would hinder his ability to govern.
At the same time, Justice Merchan rejected Trump’s motion to dismiss the case due to his victory in the presidential election and announced the date for sentencing.
Merchan wrote that bypassing the jury’s decision would weaken the rule of law immeasurably. Merchan wrote in the order, “Given the defendant’s status as the elected president, there is no need for a harsh and ‘rare’ use of the court’s authority to grant the motion to dismiss the case.” What is the hush money case? It is alleged that Donald Trump had sexual relations with adult star Stormy Daniels in 2006. This case was very much discussed in the 2016 presidential election. Stormy was threatening to make this incident public, after which Trump made a secret payment to her. Trump has been convicted of tampering with business records to hide the payment of 1 lakh 30 thousand dollars to Daniels. Earlier, Stormy Daniels had told the court that when she first saw Trump, he was wearing silk pajamas. Narrating that incident, Stormy Daniels had said that Trump had asked me about my career in the adult industry. He had asked if I had got tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
