New Delhi. Veteran Congress leader and MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Shashi Tharoor has clarified about George Soros. Tharoor has said that he has never taken a penny from American businessman and investor George Soros or any of his institutions.
Tharoor has given this clarification because the screenshot of a 15 year old tweet of his is going viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In this tweet made on 26 May 2009, Shashi Tharoor writes, ‘Met my old friend George Soros. He seemed very excited about India and was curious about the neighbors. He is much more than an investor. Soros is a concerned citizen of the world.’
BJP is attacking Congress
Actually, Indian politics is heated up these days regarding George Soros. BJP is alleging that the opposition party has good relations with George Soros and this American investor wants to harm the Indian government. Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor also came under fire when his 15-year-old tweet went viral. People started asking him what he thought about this tweet? Responding to this, Tharoor told that he has met George Soros only once more after this tweet.
Tharoor told how he was introduced
Talking about his meeting with Soros, Shashi Tharoor said, ‘There is unhealthy curiosity about this tweet. I knew Soros well during my UN days as an honest international-minded resident of New York. He was a friend in the social sense. I have never asked or taken a penny from him or any of his foundations for myself or for any institution or purpose.’

‘Many more Americans were invited’
Shashi Tharoor further said, ‘After this tweet, I met Soros only once more. That meeting took place at the house of then ambassador and now BJP minister Hardeep Singh Puri. This was when I was visiting New York as Minister of State for External Affairs. Puri had invited many prominent Americans to discuss dinner with me (and it was completely appropriate). I have not been in touch with Soros since then. My old relations have never had any political meaning left.’
‘Didn’t doubt that this would happen’
The Congress leader said, ‘I hope this will give some sense to those who are making absurd allegations about a fifteen-year-old absurd tweet. But knowing how the troll factory works, I had no doubt that this would not happen!’
