Importance of Char Dham Yatra
The Char Dham Yatra takes devotees to four important pilgrimage sites: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. These Himalayan sites hold religious significance and are visited by millions of pilgrims every year.
Yamunotri- The pilgrimage begins at the Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. To reach the temple, pilgrims have to trek 6 km from Janaki Chatti. Built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal, this temple is an important spiritual site.
Gangotri- The second pilgrimage is to Gangotri, dedicated to the river Ganges. Situated at an altitude of 3,048 metres, this temple is a place of devotion for those who want to pay respect to the holy river.
Kedarnath- The third pilgrimage is to Kedarnath. Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. Situated at an altitude of 3,584 metres, this temple is surrounded by the Himalayas. According to beliefs, the temple was originally built by the Pandavas and later rebuilt by Adi Shankaracharya.
Badrinath- The last pilgrimage is to Badrinath Dham, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It has a 3.3 meter high black stone idol of Badrinarayan and dates back to the Vedic era.
