Chances of Tahawwur Rana getting hanged? Former Home Secretary told

  • April 10, 2025

New Delhi: Tahawwur Hussain Rana, accused of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is being brought to India from America. Meanwhile, India’s former Home Secretary Gopal Krishna Pillai said that Tahawwur Rana is sure to be convicted and it is possible that he will get the death penalty.

Pillai said that Tahawwur Rana was close to David Coleman Headley, the same Headley who planned the entire Mumbai attacks and did the recce for it. Tahawwur Rana opened an immigration office in the name of his firm in Mumbai, in which Headley was given work and got a visa to come to India.

According to PTI, Pillai said that Tahawwur Rana had provided cover to Headley so that he could come to India and prepare for the attacks. Tahawwur and Headley were very close and they knew what was happening, a lot will come out in his interrogation and it will also be known what Headley told him.

Pillai clarified that even though Tahawwur Rana himself did not go to do the recce of the attacks, he is an accomplice due to his involvement in the conspiracy and will get severe punishment from the court, possibly more than 10 years in jail or death penalty. Pillai said that Pakistan’s role has already been clear in the investigation of NIA (National Investigation Agency). Many accused sitting in Pakistan have not been handed over to India till now and no action has been taken against them there, he said that initially Pakistan helped a little, but later it completely obstructed the investigation.

Another former Home Secretary and former Union Minister R.K. Singh said that R.K. Singh said that the extradition of Tahawwur Rana is a big diplomatic success for India. This gives a clear message to terrorists, he said that if you commit a terrorist attack in a country, you cannot hide anywhere. Justice has to be faced where the crime has been committed. RK Singh said that Tahawwur Rana’s interrogation can reveal many new information, which can reveal more culprits, especially the terrorist planners present in Pakistan. He said that the entire attack was planned by Pakistan’s ‘deep state’ i.e. Army, ISI etc. Training, weapons and attack, all were directed from there.

RK Singh expressed concern over how Tahawwur Rana and Headley got visas to visit India repeatedly, and whether they had any associates or ISI agents in India. Tahawwur Rana’s interrogation can also shed light on this. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said that strict action has been taken against traitors and terrorists under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He said that no traitor has been spared in the last 14 years. Now India is at a decisive turning point against terrorism.
