Big blow to BJP in Punjab, state president Sunil Jakhar resigns

Chandigarh. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a major setback before the Panchayat Elections in Punjab. BJP state president Sunil Jakhar has resigned from the post. However, the BJP high command has not yet accepted Jakhar’s resignation.

It is being told that for the last few days, Sunil Jakhar had kept distance from the important meetings of the state executive. Sunil Jakhar has kept silence about resigning.

Initial information has revealed that Sunil Jakhar was angry with the high command. The reason for the displeasure was that the high command ignored him and made Ravneet Singh Bittu a minister. The BJP high command has sent Bittu to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.

Just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, there was a big change in the Bharatiya Janata Party in Punjab. The BJP had made former Congress leader Sunil Jakhar the state president of Punjab. Sunil Jakhar joined BJP in May 2022 after the defeat of Congress in the Punjab Assembly elections. National President JP Nadda had inducted him into the BJP.

Political journey of Sunil Jakhar

Sunil Jakhar has been an MLA thrice and an MP once. He was first elected MLA from Abohar assembly constituency in 2002. Where there is a significant population of Jakhar caste in a dozen villages. He again won the assembly elections from Abohar in 2007 and 2012.

After this, he also became an MP by winning the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-election. Sunil Jakhar has also been the Congress state president in Punjab between 2017 and 2021, but Navjot Singh Sidhu was made the president in his place six months before the 2022 assembly elections.

Jakhar has good political experience in Punjab. He has a good hold in Hindu and Jat society. Sunil Jakhar has excellent experience in Punjab politics as well as good penetration in villages and cities. He has his own cadre in every assembly.

Punjab BJP general secretary Anil Sareen termed the news that Sunil Jakhar has resigned from the post of party president as baseless and false. He said, “Jakhar is the president of the state unit of BJP and is discharging his duties as president. This is false propaganda being spread by opposition parties.
