New Delhi: There has been a big upset in the results of Sri Lanka’s general elections. After the second round of counting on Sunday, the Sri Lankan Election Commission has declared 56-year-old Marxist leader Anura Kumara Disanayake as the winner of the presidential election. After winning the election, he has started preparations to take oath as the new President. It is being told that he can take oath on Monday.
According to the election results, leftist leader Anura Kumara Disanayake has emerged as the first choice for the post of President with 42.13 percent votes. While outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe has slipped to the third position. He has got 17.27% votes. At the same time, after winning the election, Disanayake has termed his victory as the victory of HAM.
NPP said that Disanayake will take oath as the 9th President of Sri Lanka on Monday. Earlier, the Election Commission had ordered a second round of counting as no candidate secured more than 50 per cent of the votes required to be declared the winner in Saturday’s election.
Giving information about this on his social media handle X, he wrote, the dream we have cherished for centuries is finally coming true. This achievement is not the result of the work of a single person, but the result of the collective effort of thousands of you. Your commitment has brought us here and for this I am heartily grateful. This victory belongs to all of us.
He further wrote, our journey here has been paved by the sacrifices of many people who gave their sweat, tears and even their lives for this cause. Their sacrifices cannot be forgotten. We hold the scepter of their hopes and struggles and understand our responsibilities. Millions of eyes filled with hope and expectation drive us forward and together we are ready to rewrite the history of Sri Lanka.
He also said that this dream can be fulfilled only with a new beginning. The unity of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and all Sri Lankans is the basis of this new beginning. The new renaissance we are looking for will emerge from this shared strength and vision. Let us join hands and shape this future together!
Anura Kumara Dissanayake contested the election as a candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) coalition, which also includes his Marxist-leaning Janata Vimukthi Peremuna (JVP) party. Let us tell you that after the economic crisis of 2022, there was a massive public uprising against the Gotabaya government in Sri Lanka. The protesters entered the Presidential Palace in Colombo, after which Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to flee the country. Ranil Wickremesinghe took over the reins of the country in this difficult time.
