New Delhi: After being passed in Lok Sabha, Waqf Amendment Bill is going to be presented in Rajya Sabha on Thursday. However, the central government will not face much difficulty in Rajya Sabha. JDU, TDP, Shiv Sena and NCP, which are part of NDA, will support it.
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju will present the Waqf Amendment Bill in Rajya Sabha at 1 pm today. There are 236 MPs in Rajya Sabha at present, due to which the support of 119 MPs is needed for majority here. BJP has 98 MPs in Rajya Sabha.
Talking about Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, the current strength of the House is 236 members. BJP has 98 members in this. If we look at the alliance, the number of NDA members is close to 115. If we add six nominated members who usually vote in favour of the government, then in the numbers game, the NDA is reaching 121, which is two more than the 119 required to pass the bill. Congress has 27 members and other constituent parties of India Block have 58 members in the Rajya Sabha.
Overall, the opposition has 85 MPs. YSR Congress has nine, BJD has seven and AIADMK has four members in the Rajya Sabha. There are three members including small parties and independents who are neither in the ruling coalition nor in the opposition coalition.
Kiren Rijiju introduced this bill in the Lok Sabha on 8 August 2024, which was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee after the uproar of the opposition. After the report of the JPC led by Jagadambika Pal, the amended bill related to it was approved by the Cabinet.
The ruling party says that through the Waqf Amendment Bill, it will get the right to settle disputes related to its properties. Waqf property can be used better and this will also help women of Muslim society.
Let us tell you that earlier the Waqf Amendment Bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha. Voting was held in the Lok Sabha on the Waqf Amendment Bill, in which out of 464 total votes, 288 were in favor and 232 were against. The debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill continued for more than 12 hours in the Lok Sabha. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and opposition MPs presented their views. Now this bill will be introduced in the Rajya Sabha and then sent to the President for approval.
