New Delhi: Vice Admiral Aarti Sareen has been appointed as the next Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services on Tuesday. She has become the first woman officer to be appointed as the head of Armed Forces Medical Services and is also the highest ranked woman officer to serve in the Indian Armed Forces. Let us tell you that DGAFMS is directly accountable to the Ministry of Defense in matters of medical policy related to the armed forces.
Know who is Aarti Sareen
Vice Admiral Sareen was commissioned in 1985. She has graduated from Armed Forces Medical College Pune. She has two postgraduate degrees in Radio Diagnosis and Radiation Oncology and is trained in Gamma Knife Surgery.
During her career, she has held many important positions. She has served as Director General of Medical Services for the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. Vice Admiral Sareen has commanded two major units – INHS Ashwini and AFMC and has also been the Command Medical Officer of the Southern Naval Command and Western Naval Command.
Sareen is also a member of the National Task Force
She has recently been appointed as a member of the National Task Force by the Supreme Court to formulate protocols for security arrangements for doctors to encourage women to join the armed forces. She was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for her outstanding service by President Draupadi Murmu in July 2024.
