First case of HMPV virus spreading in China found in Bengaluru, 8-month-old girl infected

HMPV virus has been detected in an eight-month-old girl in a hospital in Bengaluru. The Health Department says that we have not tested it in our lab. According to a statement, Director General of Health Services Dr. Vandana Bagga held a meeting with the Chief District Medical Officers on Sunday, in which preparations to deal with respiratory diseases in Delhi were discussed. Under the recommendations, hospitals have been instructed to immediately report cases of influenza-like diseases through the IHIP portal.

Strict isolation protocols and precautions have been asked for suspected cases. Hospitals have been instructed that it is necessary to maintain proper documentation of SARI cases and lab-confirmed influenza cases to ensure accurate monitoring. They have been instructed to maintain availability of oxygen as well as paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators and cough syrups to treat mild symptomatic cases.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HMPV is not a new virus. It was first detected in 2001. An expert says that some serological evidence has shown that this virus has been there since 1958.
