  • December 14, 2024

San Francisco. Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former researcher at OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence company that developed ChatGPT, was found dead in his flat in San Francisco. Suchir had recently raised serious questions about the working style of OpenAI. According to the San Francisco Police, this incident took place on November 26 and came to light on December 14.

According to local media reports, Balaji had not left his house for a long time, and was not even answering the phone calls of his friends and colleagues. When Suchir’s friends and colleagues reached his flat, they found the door locked from inside. They informed the San Francisco Police about this. When the police broke the door of the flat and entered inside, Suchir Balaji’s body was found. Initial investigation has not found any evidence of any foul play, the police suspect that it may be a suicide.

The San Francisco Chronicle quoted a police statement as saying, ‘Police officers reached the flat with a medical team and found Suchir Balaji dead. No evidence of foul play has been found during the initial investigation and it appears to be a case of suicide. The director of the San Francisco Chief Medical Examiner’s Office told the media, ‘The manner of death has been determined to be suicide.’ Suchir Balaji resigned from OpenAI in August this year and leveled serious allegations of copyright infringement against the company. After the news of his death came out, many big personalities have expressed surprise and reacted strongly to it on the Internet.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk reacted to the news with ‘Hmmm’, and did not write much. Suchir Balaji had publicly accused OpenAI of using copyrighted material without following due legal procedure to train its generative AI program, ChatGPT. He had said that technologies like ChatGPT are harming the Internet.

In an interview to the New York Times, Balaji had alleged that OpenAI’s working style is harmful to the Internet ecosystem and those businesses and people whose data is being used by the company without their consent. Suchir Balaji’s allegations have been at the center of lawsuits filed against OpenAI by several authors, programmers, and journalists who have claimed that OpenAI illegally used their copyrighted works to train its ChatGPT.
