New Delhi: India’s young star D Gukesh has become the new champion of the chess world. In the World Championship held in Singapore, Gukesh defeated Ding Liren of China and won the title. With this, Gukesh has become the youngest world champion in the history of chess. On Thursday, December 12, a tough fight was seen between the two in the 14th and last round of the championship, where defending champion Liren made a small mistake, which cost him heavily.

With this, India’s Gukesh created a record by becoming the world champion at the age of just 18. The special thing is that he is also the 18th World Chess Champion. In the World Championship going on in Singapore for the last several days, there was a tough competition between China’s Ding and India’s Gukesh. Ding won this championship last year.

In such a situation, he entered this championship as the defending champion. Gukesh, on the other hand, entered this championship as a challenger after winning the Candidates Tournament held earlier this year. He became only the second Indian and the youngest player in the world after Vishwanathan Anand to reach the World Championship.

On Thursday, 12 December, the 14th and final round of the championship was held between Gukesh and Ding. In the 13 rounds played before this, both had won 2-2 matches, while the remaining 9 matches were drawn. In such a situation, both had equal 6.5 points. In such a situation, this match was decisive. If this match was also drawn, then both would have had 7-7 points and then the decision would have been made by tiebreaker, but Chennai’s miraculous Grandmaster Gukesh did not let this happen. The Indian sensation defeated the Chinese Grandmaster in this last match and won the title by a margin of 7.5 – 6.5.

As soon as Ding resigned, Gukesh could not control his emotions and started crying while sitting on his chair. The joy of victory, the feeling of a dream coming true and a relief was clearly visible on his face, while tears were also flowing from his eyes. With this victory, Gukesh immortalized his name not only in Indian chess but also in world chess forever. Gukesh is only the second Indian player to become a world champion after Vishwanathan Anand. Gukesh will also get Rs 18 crore as a reward for this victory.
