The NDA government is is all set for ‘One Nation One Election’ bill

September 16, 2024

New Delhi. The NDA government at the Center will bring a bill on ‘One nation one election’ during its current tenure. Sources gave this information on Sunday. The concept of holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies has been named ‘One Nation, One Election’. Sources said that all the political parties involved in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), especially the allies in the central government, are expected to support this bill.

This report has come just before the completion of the first 100 days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third consecutive office. Let us tell you that the results of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 were declared on June 4 and five days later, on June 9, Narendra Modi took oath as Prime Minister for the third consecutive time. ‘One Nation One Election’ has been one of the key promises in the BJP’s Lok Sabha election manifesto. Even during his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort this year, Prime Minister Modi had requested all political parties to come together on the issue of One Nation One Election.

Elections should be held for just 3 or 4 months: PM

PM Modi had said, “I request everyone to come together to achieve the resolution of One Nation One Election, which is the need of the hour.” Before the Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi had said on this issue that elections should not be held during the entire five-year term of the governments. He had said, “I always say that elections should be held for just three or four months. There should be no politics for the entire five years. This will reduce the cost of managing elections.”

He had said, “We have constituted a committee under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind for One Nation One Election. It has submitted its report. We are studying it, after which such points will emerge on which further steps will be taken. One Nation One Election is our commitment and it is not just a political commitment. It is very important for the country.” Sources also said that the ‘Modi 3.0 government’ is completing 100 days next week and it is committed to its resolutions made in 2014.

Ramnath Kovind committee has submitted its report
The committee led by former President Ramnath Kovind submitted its report in March on the possibilities of One Nation One Election. According to the suggestions given in this report, as a first step, elections of Lok Sabha and state assemblies should be held simultaneously. The committee has further recommended that local body elections should also be held within 100 days of the completion of Lok Sabha and state assembly elections simultaneously. This will enable elections at all levels to be conducted in a fixed time period across the country. Currently, elections of state assemblies and Lok Sabha are held separately.
