New Delhi: The government company which PM Modi praised in Parliament last year. It has given bumper profits to investors in the last one year. At the same time, now promoting Make in India, the Ministry of Defense has made a big deal with the public sector aerospace company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. With this deal, the company and investors are expected to get rich once again. Actually, HAL will now make 240 aero-engines for the Air Force’s fighter jet Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft.
The Ministry of Defense has done this deal with HAL for Rs 26,000 crore. This move is being seen as a promotion of the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. These aero-engines will be manufactured by HAL’s Koraput Division. It is expected that it will meet the need of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to maintain the operational capability of the Sukhoi-30 fleet. The contract was signed by senior officials of the ministry and HAL in the presence of Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary. The delivery of all 240 engines will be completed over a period of next eight years.
These engines will be manufactured by HAL’s Koraput division. They are expected to meet the needs of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to maintain the operational capability of the Su-30. HAL will supply 30 aero-engines per year as per the contracted delivery schedule. HAL plans to seek support from the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. This includes MSMEs and public and private industries. HAL aims to increase the indigenisation content to 54 per cent by the end of the delivery programme. This will also help in increasing the indigenous content of aero-engine repair and overhaul works.
IAF’s Su-30 MKI is also undergoing a Rs 63,000 crore upgrade programme. Experts said that the AL-31FP engines will play an important role in maintaining the operational readiness of the Su-30MKI fleet, a major aircraft of the Indian Air Force. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has appointed DK Sunil as the new chairman of the company. DK Sunil was earlier holding the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) in the company.
