Kolkata. Amidst the ongoing demonstration against the rape-murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Kolkata Police has imposed Section 163 (former Section 144 of CrPC) of the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023 in the city. This order will be effective for the next seven days from August 18.
Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal issued an order on Saturday, stating that rallies, meetings, processions, dharna, demonstrations and unlawful assembly of five or more persons are prohibited in the specified area. Along with this, if any person is found carrying weapons or tries to disturb the peace, strict action will be taken against him.
The order states that this ban has been imposed after information received from reliable sources. The inputs indicate sufficient reasons for violent demonstrations, rallies and meetings by a section of the public or an organization, which is likely to disrupt the peace.
Let us tell you that on August 9, the body of a trainee female doctor was found in a semi-nude state in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The post-mortem confirmed that the doctor was raped and murdered, after which the doctors started a nationwide strike demanding justice. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the mob carried out vandalism at the protest site and hospital premises in RG Kar College. During this, some police personnel were injured and college property and vehicles were damaged. Security forces had to use force to control the mob.
