Nemawar: A massive explosion in a firecracker factory in Banaskantha district of Gujarat on Tuesday took the lives of 20 people. The deceased included 10 people from Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh and 8 from Harda district. On Thursday, the last rites of these 18 workers were performed together on the banks of the Narmada river at Nemawar Ghat in Dewas district. Two other bodies have not been identified yet, which will be identified through DNA test. During this, the family members raised the demand for justice, while the administration assured investigation.
When 18 pyres were lit simultaneously on the banks of the Narmada river, there was screaming all around. Every eye was moist and every heart was sad. The relatives of the deceased performed the last rites, but their wounds are deep. Dewas and Harda district administration made all the arrangements for the last rites. Administrative officers and public representatives were also present on this occasion. The families who lost their loved ones in the accident appealed to the government for justice and proper compensation.
Deceased Babita’s son Amar said while crying, “I have lost everything. My mother and one brother died in this accident, while my other brother is still missing. I want justice.” At the same time, Shivlal, another relative of the deceased, said, “I lost my two sisters, one brother and three nephews in this accident. My brother-in-law is still in Gujarat and he is in a bad condition due to crying.”
Before the last rites, the bodies of 9 laborers of Dewas district were taken to their native village Sandalpur, while the body of contractor Pankaj was brought to Khategaon. 8 bodies of Handia village of Harda district were brought directly from Gujarat to Nemawar Ghat. Collectors of both the districts said that the administration provided full help in bringing the bodies respectfully and making arrangements for the last rites. Former minister and BJP leader Kamal Patel said, “This accident is very sad.
We are with the victim families and demand appropriate action from the government.” Meanwhile, Congress MLA from Harda, Dr. RK Dogne, also expressed grief and said, “The families of these workers should get justice. This is not just a matter of compensation, but a question of security.” Harda Collector Aditya Singh said, “We delivered all the bodies to their families and helped in the last rites.
The matter is under investigation.” Dewas Collector Rituraj Singh said, “The bodies were brought by ambulance and funeral arrangements were made in collaboration with the family members. DNA test is being done to identify two bodies.” On April 1, an explosion in a firecracker warehouse in Deesa area of Banaskantha destroyed the entire building. 20 people died in this accident, out of which 18 have been identified.
Most of the deceased were laborers from Madhya Pradesh, who had gone to Gujarat for livelihood. Gujarat Police has arrested the warehouse owner and his son and the investigation is ongoing. After the accident, the Gujarat government announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased. The central government and Madhya Pradesh government also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each. The injured will be given Rs 50,000. But the families say that compensation cannot bring back their loved ones, they want justice.
